The Rattler
September/October 2010
Change is in the air with fall. It comes slowly and you have to keep your eyes open on the trail to notice the season is changing but suddenly the poison oak leaves turn bright red and that is a sure sign that summer is behind us. There is more dew on the ground early in the morning and many plants are going to start a growth spurt. Come and walk on the trails, the days are getting shorter, the light is sharp: enjoy and embrace this new season.

This is our summer time issue. There will be no Rattler in July and August and we will talk again in September. Enjoy the warmer weather and the glorious summer in California. Come and visit Placerita Canyon Nature Center, the wild flowers are at their best right now.

March/April 2010
Spring is here. The Great-horned owls already have babies in their nests and all the other birds are into courtship, looking for the perfect mate and the best place to build a nest. Soon you will see different birds on their migratory journey and the first Western tanager is always a special gift. Come and walk the trails; the air is cool and moist, the sky is blue and there are so many fresh smells everywhere. Happy Spring to you!

Hello everyone and Happy New Year! Can you believe we are already at 2010? I can still remember the Y2K panic like it was yesterday.
In this first issue of the New Year, we can make Pam Koch's wishes come true, hear what Jim Southwell has to say for himself, meet Jim Owens and see how Helen Sweany gets Children Interested in Nature.

May/June 2009
Summer is already here and we are taking some time off as usual. However, that doesn’t mean this issue is lacking in information. Richard Norton submitted a great article on Desert Blonde Tarantulas, Pam Koch is interested in crickets and other critters that fiddle, Bob Fischer is all about the Western Bluebird (of happiness?) and Evelyne Vandersande is on her soap box about weeds. So come on in and enjoy all that this issue of the Rattler has to offer. Have a safe and wonderful summer and we will see you in September.

Happy New Year Everyone!
It is hard to believe that 2008 is just a memory. In 2009 we are looking forward to another successful Docent Training class and to meeting many fine people with similar likes and dislikes. Ron and his Docent Training committee have worked hard to put together a great class schedule. In this issue we are also saying goodbye to Ian Swift. The center seems empty without him, but Frank Hoffman has been filling Ian’s shoes quite well. You can also read about Jim Southwell and Pam Koch’s luncheons with Supervisor Mike Antonovich, Mayor Bob Kellar and Congressman Buck McKeon. So grab a cup of coffee and settle in at your computer and enjoy this first issue of the Rattler, 2009!
